The act of writing is often political. But whereas “political art” aims to be prescriptive and morally assured, the strength of fiction remains in its ability to explore and complicate our long-held beliefs, to muddy truths that once felt clear. The authors of this panel have wrestled with overtly political topics in their work—from immigration policy to state-enacted violence to the lasting damage of colonial history—but with approaches that focus on narrative and character.
