[ wigleaf 50 — again!]

Yesterday, I saw that the new Wigleaf Top 50 Very Short Fictions list came out the day before. This list is one of my favorite lists every year, because it always features such a great list of flash fiction, which is a medium I have come to really love over the years. Flash fiction is perfect to read quickly when you don't have a ton of time, and usually packs a punch because it's so compressed.

Anyway, I headed over to the list because flash fiction also tends to be stuff I can bring to my students to read, since it's short enough for them to digest in a way that longer short fiction is not (that stuff gets too overwhelming for them). I saw Alex Chee's story, "Hunger" and I was like "Oooh! Alex Chee! Great one!" and then I was like "OH!" because my name was right under Alex's and I hadn't expected to see it there. My story, "Devils, Our Sons," was published in Gulf Coast last year, and I guess I didn't even realize it was eligible for consideration. So it was a total surprise to me to see my name on the list!

But I am super pleased. It's my second year on the list (last year, my story "Pomegranate" was also on Wigleaf's Top 50), but it still feels like a total honor to be among such amazing writers.

You can see the full Top 50 here.

Thanks to Amber Sparks for choosing my story among so many worthy ones! And to Matthew Salesses who first accepted this story for publication.
